Visitors from around the globe
May 9th 2006 10:34:31 pm

I was just checking out our Swap-bot stats for today found the map of where our visitors come from to be pretty interesting. I find it strange that we don’t get any visitors from the middle of the United States. Do they not like to swap great things in the middle of the country?

Hmph. What am I, chopped liver?
Seriously, though, it looks like it just reflects the population distribution… heavily weighted toward Mississippi-to-Atlantic and west coast, and a lot of sparsely populated country through the Rocky Mountain area.

Hm. Maybe nobody lives there? Or they don’t have post offices? lol
I was surprised to see no dot on Mexico. Maybe that day was a rare occasion on which I did not check the site.

I just announced a swap to my 3600 subscribers. Maybe that will fill in the middle for you

Hi! I’m new to Swap-Bot & I have a question. If someone contacts me via the Swap-Bot emailing system, how will I know that I have a message? Please don’t laugh if this is painfully obvious to everyone besides me! LOL
I ask b/c I have sent 2 people messages & I’m not sure how to check if I’ve received a response. Thanks so much! Jessica

It might be that they don’t do computers?? The map concentrations are consistant with the spread of population.

Hey just checked out the map… Funny thing huh? I would think that the middle would be more so as a lot of fine and talented folks live in middle America. Maybe we should let some of them know that swap-bot is a rockin’ place to swap.

THEY ARE BORING IN THE MIDDLE STATES LOL

I am in the Midwest, and tonight is the first time I have ever heard of swap-bot. Followed sunflower-pixie’s link on livejournal http://community.livejournal.com/rak_wishlist/ - June 5, 2006 - and here I am :-).
I have had fun reading through the swaps, and printed out some for Mom - she’s a big yarn arts/crafts person. I think she’s thinking about a couple of them .
Have a great evening!

There are very few Postcrossers (www.postcrossing.com) from middle US, too. I always wonder why that is but suspect it is very limited Internet access. I am amazed at how many people in Pittsburgh, PA (not even central US) don’t have Internet access, and don’t want it either. When I ask why, I get answers that indicate lots of fear and distrust.

I just signed up for a swap and I am about as middle America as you can get…Kansas. So there are a few of us out there.

I’m from Bellevue, NE and just signed up to swap. I’m a little east and north of the geographic center of the US (which interestingly enough happens to be a couple miles from Lebanon, Kansas) and am really looking forward to swapping. I signed up for my first 3 swaps and have a great idea for one as well.

Wild guess: Perhaps the economic situation in the middle of the states isn’t as good???

Duh, silly. It’s ’cause there’s hardly any people in the middle. Trust be, I drove throught it wtice (once the middle route, once the lower). Its just very empty out there. The cities are very spread out.

At least 1 person is from the middle of the country - me! I live in Kansas, aka “Ground Zero” :

Hm, that is odd! Maybe because you see a lot of crafty-artistic types in Seattle, California, NYC and so they’re more into this stuff…?

The map reflects population distribution in the US, I would think. For example - dead center in the middle of that empty area in the US is the state of Wyoming. (There are a couple of swappers who live in Wyoming I know!).
But the state of Wyoming as a whole has as many people in it as does the Toledo, Oh metro area.
If your stat program is doing anything like averaging — showing one dot for ever 10 swappers or something — the areas with lower populations, like Wyoming, are going to get shorted.

Hey…I don’t see any Canadian dots? I know I’m in and swap with other Canadians. Don’t forget about us.
Adelle on 08 Feb 2007 at 9:06 pm #
I just joined and I am in Nebraska. How do we get our “dot” to show up on the map?
