I love, love scrapbooking. I make sure to take photos of important events to just silly mundane days. Then when I am living away from family or my husband is deployed I can go to my scrapbooks and remember all the fun times we had…it’s a fun way of preserving a memory.

I preserve our memories in photo albums and shoe boxes!! I actually have 3-4 huge boxes of pictures that need to be worked on. I never really got into scrapbooking. I also make small picture collages to hang up. And our short hallway is full of framed pictures from different times in our lives!!

I have always taken a camera with me everywhere!!! I have 3 children …all teens now…so I have some great pics thru the years and these are all organized in photo keeper boxes…but the really great thing I did for each of the children ,when they were toddlers, was to make a keepsake box out of one of those great big popcorn tins you always see around christmas. Each has a design on their tin that goes along with the personality and likes of that child. That way they know at a glance which tin belongs to which child … and the 3 tins are stacked in a corner of the living room. Out of the way but they look good and evoke memories just to look at them!!!Some of the items in the tins are favorite outfits, shoes, rattles, binkies, blankets, & stuffed animals that were their favorites! The tins are airtight and keep everything clean and neat!!!

I keep around me special things that people have given me: my favourite aunt’s sweet sixteen jewellry remade into a beautiful crystal bracelet, 2 afghans made by a dear friend, a stained glass box given to me by my childhood girlfriend, a lap quilt sewn by my mother. I find that having items that I can wrap around myself, or pick up and hold in some way, helps me feel close to those people in my life.

My swap-bot id is mercmom41. One way I save memories is taking tons of pictures with our digital camera, and uploading them to the computer and looking through them almost every day. Then every couple months I create an album online and share it with my family and friends. Our 18-month old is the only grandchild on my side of the family, and they all live far away, so it’s a great way for them to keep track of her and feel involved.
Gamflin2day (Judy) on 05 Jan 2009 at 7:11 pm #
I like to copy old family photographs and use the copies in a variety of ways: to wrap gifts, to decoupage gift boxes, use in collages, postcards, etc. I made a bracelet for my sister out of old photos of all the matriarchs in the family and she loves it.
Keeping the photos in a box or stashed away in acid-free paper will preserve them long after I’m gone, but duplicating and sending them out as gifts is a way for me to ensure they will continue to live on in the memories of others.

Every Year i draw my kids photos on a little index card, i then place them in an album and fro each child. so when they are older they will have hand drawn photos of them selves.. Also in the Photo book is our ancestry and stories about them. so on each index card i would place a note about an ancestor what they did or where they live at that age and where they can find them in the book, kinda an index..

With normal evryday things I just take photos.
But with things like holidays I make travelbooks, in them I keep pictures, tickets, coins, etc and I make sketches of the sights and write in it as a daily journal while on the go.
As I like vintage/victorian stuff I decorate them after that theme.
I also make victorian styled speciem jars with sand, dirt and so on from the areas visited.

I tale lots of digital photographs. I always make sure I get picture of a sign of where we were and try to make sure the date is correct on the camera. Then I also try to get brochures, and other items with information on where we are including pictures of any plaques we might see. I make sure I get everyone (not just the kids) in a lot of the photographs. We also collect mementos of where we visited. After we get home I create a new folder for each event and then when time allows I create memory books (either digital or “traditional”) of the events, sometimes even making a memory box to store everything from that event.

I used to keep many photographs but increasingly found that the act of taking photos spoiled the spontaneity of many special moments and the magic of special places also failed to come through on images alone. I now rely on my memory, where I store images, sounds, scents and feelings. I can relive these regardless of where I find myself.

We take a lot of digital photos, organized by year-month-day, and back them up on DVD-ROMs. We try to make an annual photo calendar with photos from the previous year (e.g. Jan 2008 photos for the Jan 2009 page) but don’t always follow through with that. I learned from a friend of mine to take photos of 3D objects we want to preserve (like school projects).
I go through accumulated school papers at the end of the year and keep ones that seem significant or meaningful for one reason or another. These I keep in a file storage box, one per child.

It has everything from a piece of my mother and my mother in laws wedding dress which I am planning on having made into a handkerchief. and Pictures of wedding planning events, dress shopping, cake tasting.

I usually have my camera attached to my hip because I always find some reason to take those memorable pictures to share will my family and friends. Being retired and a grandmother of 7 beautiful grandchildren, I have an overflowing box of the most precious pictures that need to be organized. Over the past few year’s I have stored many pictures on my hard drive. My new year’s resolution is to become more organized with all of these pictures so,I have just begun to creat a scrapbook as well as a family website. I would love to have a few supplies to help me be more creative with my scrapbooking but supplies can be very expensive. Therefore, I try to improvise with what I can find around the house. Recently,I have made copies of some of my old pictures embellishing and framed them as gifts.

What is one way you preserve special memories?
One of the ways I preserve special memories… Is through little “Treasure boxes”…
For example, I have this large wood puzzle box with my name engraved on it that my dad had made for me when he was deployed to Turkey when I was about 14…
The key is hidden inside the box. So you have to find the key, then find the key hole in order to open it. I keep little mementos from fun days and trips… Like ticket stubs, souvenir coins, thimbles, trinkets, the pins I inherited from my great grandmother, ect… In this box. I also have another box where I keep natural keepsakes that I find out and about like feathers, dried flowers and such.

I am making shadow boxes with photos and other “stuff” from my parents and in-laws. They have all pass away and our kids don’t have many memories of them. This will help us share grandparent stories with our kids, and my wife and I will be reminded of fond memories too.

Whenever my husband and I take a long trip (3 days or more), we keep a “trip log” that includes postcards, ticket stubs, receipts, etc. and we each write a little blurb in it at the end of each day, describing where we went & what we did. We leave a few blank pages here and there and after the trip, I paste photos on those pages. We have trip logs dating back to our first year of marriage (1988) and it’s so much fun to look back and read about our adventures together.

Sometimes I write a journal diary too (for example from a summer vacation).
And I collect things, which has a special meaning for me, to the box.
So…thats how Lorelei preserves her memories.

My husband built a 10 foot long parallelogram shaped cork board that sits above the handrail and runs the entire length of our front stairs. It is packed with pictures, postcards, ticket stubs, invitations etc from important events in our lives. We are 2 feet from the end; I think we will need another board in the near future!

I find that the best way to preserve special memories is to send them to my best friend… weird? Maybe
I find that the act of sitting down and expressing these memories in writing, or making a nice photo album, or taking the time and effort to compile a journal and sticking in important items etc, really cements them in my mind. I then remember them vividly and take great pleasure in sharing them with somebody dear.
I figure that if I kept such things, it would sit in a pile somewhere to be taken out only very occasionally to be seen. This way, I get to see them when I visit her, and we can share them together

The way I “preserve” memories is taking pictures of everything special to me. I’m very into photography and capturing a photo to go along with the memory is the best. It’s a great thing to reminisce and I always have the joy of reminiscing by looking through all my old photographs.

I like to have my kids hold things they have made and I take their picture. Then I don’t have to keep all the bulky things they have made. We also make special Christmas cards each year that we come up with on our own. We come up with some concept and then take pictures that go with it of the kids. After many years we have a nice collection that documents the family’s growth.

Besides taking pictures and journaling, I love keeping little trinkets and things like wrappers, fabric scraps, ticket stubs, labels, handwritten notes, receipts, etc and adding them to my journal. The actual physical item being in my journal makes me think of the exact day and what happened then.
One of my favorites is a duct tape heart my boyfriend cut out…or tried to. We weren’t “official” then, but I was sitting in his room, playing with a roll of duct tape and cut out a perfect heart; he tried to do the same and it came out kinda terrible, but it was cute. Later that night we became “official”, so the wonky duct tape heart always reminds me of that night.

I have made keepsake boxes for me and my daughter. Each box is decorated reflecting our personalities. Within the box is each of our memories. Even the items inside are made special. (Example: Concert tickets are made into tags, my daughters baby teeth are in a little tooth made from felt. Airline tickets and little trinkets from trip are made into shrines. You get the picture). I will give my daughter her keepsake box when she moves out and she will be able to continue adding to it.

What is one way you preserve special memories?
I preserve special memories by writing them down. It has the twofold effect of removing them from my immediate attention by putting them someplace tangible and solidifying them in my long term memory because seeing them, reading, them and writing them reinforces them.

When my, now grown, children were little I just loved all the wonderful things they made in school. So, I started collecting wonderful little momentos. They each had a nice sized box for each year of school that included teeth lost, photos of events, report cards, corsages..anything that represented that year of school. I marked each box with dates and how old they were. Over the years they have enjoyed going back through those boxes…with their children. Many of them were consolidated over the years and now they have wonderful momentos from their childhood.
In addition, a few years ago I bought a scanner and scanned all of my family photos from as far back as I could find of every picture we have in the family. I organized all of them into digital photo albums and made a copy for each of my children. Each year at Christmas I present them with a new digital photo album for the year that includes all of our family photos taken at events…even camera phone photos get added in. LOL..now they each send me pictures and ask me to include them in the annual photo album.

When my grandchildren are on holidays, at the end of a busy day, we sit at the table with our journals and markers and jot down what was the best event of the day. With modern technology of digital cameras and photo docks, I am able to add a picture of their event to their journal story. By the end of their visit, they have a book full of stories to tell. But it stays with me so that it can continue on with more stories, pictures, laughter, love and memories with future visits! <3

I’m rubbish at scrapbook/card making so I usually make something that I or the kids can use often; I made several jewellery pieces out of the flowers and trims of my wedding veil and used the rest of the veil to create christening baby bootees for the twins. My first son’s 1st baby socks were made into a keyring charm. Baby blankets/Towels are used to create soft toys so the kids have a lasting keepsake etc. All these things and the stories behind them can be passed onto their children .

some people put it through diaries, others make scrapbooks and tear off baby bottle formulas labels, cut off one of their old favorite shirts, even put spray perfume in notebooks and getdried out roses and smash them into the books, but as for me, i look through the past with my memory and pictures. Music helps me preserve a lot of things i have been through..experiences of catching the surf wave while surfing is just a memory away. i could never express myself fulling in a bunch of pages, but the way i story tell and seeing my facial reactions as i explain.

I get cheap souvenirs when I travel–I collect squished pennies, among other things. I’m a packrat and I have tons of shelves covered in odd objects, most of which have stories behind them. I really need a victorian-style curio cabinet…or two, or three.

I keep a journal for all three of my children, and write letters to them periodically in them. I’ve designated each child a shelf inside a cubby under the stairs the our house to keep certain things for them. Pictures, stories they have written, artwork they have done, and a notebook that I use to “interview” them on their birthdays. It has been so hilarious to see the changes in their answers over the years to things like: “How much does a car cost?”, “How do you think the sky gets colored blue?”, “If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?”-things like that. I love going back and reading through them, it always gives me a laugh!

Whenever i can, i take pictures; i got them hanging all over my house; in the form of calenders, posters, little pictureframes etc. The “real” memories, from vacations i like to get in the form of beads, and after i get home i make them into necklaces, i have now, i guess, 20 of them hanging on my bedroom walls.
For the other stuff i can’t put on a string, i like to put them in these little bags and boxes and i (really!) put them everywhere in other boxes, drawers etc. So each time i look for something, i unexpectedly find a memory! (this is really fun btw, you should try it!)

I, PurpleTX, have a couple of small shadow boxes for the REALLY important things, flowers from Prom & Wedding - things like that. Then I also save ticket stubs from the concerts that I attended with people that are important to me.

Anymore we just keep them on the camera or downloaded into the compy. I keep saying I’m going to start scrapbooking but can never find the time (or motivation)

My husband and I take alot of pictures and save all of our cards we get thru each year. I take the pics and make blowups of them and make bigger pictures on our wall. I just paste our cards on scrapebooking paper and have them in an album and they are saved and preserved. I also have alot of my grandmother’s old doilies that I have put in shawdow boxes and I have her picture in them. We collect magnets from everywhere we have ever been and they are all over my frig. Thanks Robin (RuthieKay - swapbot ID)

To be honest I’m about 8 years behind in preserving family memories in special scrapbooks. My son loves looking through them which makes me very happy. They will be something he can enjoy through his life.I like to keep artwork and cards in big plastic containers that are labeled. We also keep postcards, photos and travel momentos from each place in sheet protectors also-easy to access and you can see through them easily.(sricher808-swapbot ID)

After trying many things, for the past twelve years I have kept a year book which can expand in size as the year progresses. Each one contains write ups of special events, photos, programmes, cards I want to keep, concert stubs, newspaper cuttings, etc. I’ve even started collating earlier ones as I come across old stuff. They are great way to keep everything in one place and fun to look back at.

I take lots of photos - once I even took more than 50 shots of my daughter sitting in her little high chair to get JUST the right one. I also scrapbook, keep memory boxes, write notes in my diaries, and hoard all the family treasures and discarded ephemera. After my gran died, my aunt ruthlessly grabbed all the photos for herself, tossing out a few of people she didn’t recognise. I removed them from the garbage bin (I was 14) and when I started scrapbooking at 23, I went through the photos - and discovered a precious family portrait of when my gran was 3 years old! I also make “scrapbook on canvas” mixed media pieces, especially with found photos (and even whole albums I found) of ladies who died without family. I feel it is my sacred duty to remember their loves, losses and existence somehow.

I collage them. Each year our family tries to vacation together. We vacation at Lake Erie and have a wonderful week. One of my favorite collages is the one I did after our first year together. It’s hanging on my wall at work. I can’t help smiling when I look at it.

I have a cedar Hope chest with individual cedar boxes inside with each of my children’s names on them. I put the most special things in these boxes and as each turns 18 I gift them at Christmas with their box.
I am down to 2 boxes
- out of 6….they grow up so fast!

I use scrapbooks to preserve memories. I’m constantly behind though because I love scrapbooking so much, I spend lots of time on each page. I also have tons of framed pictures all over the house and have created a few shadowboxes using pictures and mementos.

I scrapbook and I save ALOT of my kids artwork which I cut and collage on canvas! I would rather have my children’s artwork on my wall than any other artist!

I keep things around me that remind me of the person or event. I wear my grandmother’s necklace, my mother’s bracelet, my brother’s earring, & my wedding ring. I recently lost 2 cats on the same day & a friend sent me some earrings which are now my kitteh earrings. I have a picture of my parents on my desk. I’ve also gotten body art to commemorate a life event & I regularly have bonfires in memory of family & friends.

I love to create scapbooks but only have a couple of scrap booking tools (but I am building my supply) and boy-o-boy would this be a great new tool to add to that supply.
Very best regards,
