Mailboxes of the World

Post Office in Stonington, Maine

stonington maine post office

While visiting the tiny island town of Stonington, Maine, last week, I spied their picturesque Post Office and had to share the photos.

The lobster fishing town has about 1,000 residents, a beautiful view of the sea, and a cute main street. Even more remote is the nearby island of Isle au Haut, that is only reachable twice a day by mail boat from Stonington!

mailboxes of the world: Brooklyn, New York

mailbox_brooklyn

Well… we made it home from our wild European adventure! I thought it was only appropriate to share my local mailbox. This USPS mailbox is located in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I have mailed many, many postcards, bills, and greeting cards from this box!

mailboxes of the world: Paris, France

This French La Poste mailbox was spotted in Paris very near to the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower also has its own small post office where you can buy stamps and postcards… but it was closed when I visited.

paris_postcards

I did stop by a local La Poste branch near my hotel and picked up some stamps for mailing lots more postcards. Paris was the final stop on our big Europe trip, so I made sure to send plenty of snail mail from there!

Can you spot Mona Lisa going into the mailbox? I got to see the painting in person at the Louvre — amazing, but so crowded! — and then sent out quite a few postcards versions of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece. I love art postcards!

mailboxes of the world: Switzerland

Another worldly mailbox for you, this time from Switzerland! I spotted this Swiss La Poste box in Lausanne near the train station. Very clean! No graffiti for La Poste!!

Our stay in the country was very brief, so I only mailed a couple of postcards from Switzerland. I gotta send a bit of mail from every country I visit!!

mailboxes of the world: Vatican City

vatican_post

Vatican City is its own sovereign country walled off inside of Rome. It is the smallest country in the world and it is an absolute monarchy, with the Pope in charge! Poste Vaticane has operated its own postal service and issued its own postage stamps since 1929. The Vatican mailboxes are very similar to Italy’s, but yellow instead of red. However, you cannot use Italian stamps in the Vatican, or vice versa.

vatican_stamps

The Vatican Post Office was my first stop after touring the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica last week. It is set up for tourists, with lots of postcards, souvenirs, and stamps to buy. I sent five postcards from the Vatican. Supposedly, the Vatican postal service is exceptionally reliable, so I hope they all arrive!!

I hear that stamps and mail from the Vatican is quite collectible. I wish I had sent myself a postcard!!

mailboxes of the world: Venice, Italy

venice_post2

The mailboxes in Italy are all about the same, red Poste Italiane boxes, like this one seen in Venice. Many of the mailboxes have graffiti on them, but otherwise, they are nearly identical.

I have mailed quite a few postcards from Italy. But, you guys!! International postcards sent from Italy cost $2 Euro each in postage! Wow. I did not realize it cost almost three times the cost of international postcards from the US. Oh well, snail mail must go on! I bought a LOT of Italian stamps at the Venice post office, like the ones seen below.

I have been taking a photo of every mailbox I see, but many of them in Italy are very similar…I’ll be sure to keep you posted on any unique ones I come across!

Happy snail mailing!!

mailboxes of the world: Prague, Czech Republic

praguemailboxblog

When we were in Vienna we met up with some of our Brooklyn friends. When we went south to Venice, they went north to Prague in the Czech Republic. My friend Amanda sent me this photo of a mailbox she spotted there.

Czech Post uses similar colors, logos, and boxes as its German and Austrian counterparts. It is cool to see all the different variations!

Happy snail mailing!

mailboxes of the world: Austria

I had never been to Austria before and I was amazed by the beauty of the city of Vienna. I spied this mailbox just outside the Ringstrasse and the city center. The Austrian postal service logo, colors, and mailboxes are very similar to Germany’s.

I also really liked these funny, promotional postal service displays inside the post office, where I mailed a LOT of postcards!

Next stop, Italy!

mailboxes of the world: Germany

germanpostmarksburg

Guten tag from small town Germany! We are visiting castles all along the Rhine Valley. I spotted this adorable Deutsche Post mailbox at the Marksburg Castle in Braubach, Germany. I mailed quite a few castle postcards there!

germandpost2

I also mailed many postcards at the less quaint “briefkasten” in Bacharach, the town where we are staying. I’ve been sending a lot of postcards!

germandpost3

These last two charming mailboxes are personal boxes on homes in Braubach. Very cute!

PostNL mailboxes

Swap-bot Headquarters in on the road! Since I will be traveling through Europe for the next month, I thought it would be fun to share photos of the mailboxes I find in each country. These mailboxes are part of PostNL and I spotted them in Amsterdam.

Internet is not as available or reliable as I was hoping so far on our journey… but hopefully I’ll be sharing more mailboxes soon!
